The outcry prompted the city to repair and refurbish the Sputnik-era relic originally installed in 1960 at the outset of the Space Age. Memories are still relatively fresh of the community uproar that followed the 1992 removal of the namesake vintage playground equipment at Los Arboles Rocketship Park. But officials are moving cautiously before reaching a final decision. If it’s unsafe and can’t be fixed, presumably the city will remove it for liability reasons. “The dolphin is so popular for kids to play on, but it may be to the point of disrepair and can’t be repaired any longer,” said Mike Wilson, who was the city’s park services manager when it was installed, likely about 1983 or 1984, although no one can remember exactly when. For about three decades, a small gray dolphin sculpture has sat in Torrance’s beach-front Miramar Park, a magnet for delighted kids who clambered upon the whimsical artwork surrounded by a rubberized mat to cushion against the inevitable falls.īut exposure to the elements over the years has taken its toll.Ībout three months ago, the deteriorating dolphin was encircled by a chain-link fence as a precaution, while city officials figured out whether it could be repaired.
